Long description

This basilica is one of the most important Marian sanctuaries in the Catholic world

According to tradition, the basilica was built in the same place where the Virgin appeared to the apostle Santiago who was preaching on the banks of the Ebro. The first chapel was built around the column or “ pillar” on which the Virgin leaned. This Pillar symbolizes the Christianization of Spain and its festival, October 12,  Hispanic Day
