When the relics of the apostle Santiago are discovered in the 11th century, King Alfonso II the Chaste,  orders the construction of a small church  which   it was enlarged due to the large number of pilgrims who began to arrive. In 1075 it was placed the first stone  and from here The best Romanesque builders began to arrive, such as Master Mateo, to whom we owe the famous Pórtico de la Gloria, a masterpiece of Romanesque sculpture. The cathedral was consecrated in  1211.During several centuries, altarpieces were added and chapels changed. Among the different architectural styles that can be seen is the Romanesque, the Gothic, the Baroque on the façade of the Obradoiro, the main altar and the Holy Door that is only opened during holy years. The neoclassical style can be found on the façade of Acibecherí. ;a, built by Ventura Rodríguez and Lois Monteagudo. Also notable are the Platerías façade, the Clock Tower, the main chapel, the crypt and the famous Botafumeiro. In this ancient Cathedral, kings and archbishops have been crowned, battles have taken place and it has served as a barracks for invading soldiers. This Cathedral  is the final goal of the pilgrims who travel the   Camino de Santiago to the tomb of the apostle, named patron saint of Spain in 1630. Its impressive facades of different styles will surprise us, Declared an Artistic Monument in 1986
