The building was built It was built on Roman remains and in its construction materials from the Roman theater located at its feet were used, such as columns and capitals. In 1279 it passed to the Nasrid kingdom. and its renovation combines the defense needs and the beauty of a palace organized around rectangular patios with their gardens and ponds. With an irregular, elongated plan adapted to the topography of the terrain, the palace experienced successive reforms and extensions until the 15th century. Its military component makes it one of the most important Muslim works preserved in Spain. With machicolations, spier towers with arrow slits and crenellated walls as defensive elements, however, its best defense was in its location, dominating the city and the bay from its balconies. Around it there was a neighborhood, completely disappeared today, that even had its system to evacuate sewage, and  with latrines in almost all the houses, which accredits the high level of civilization that existed at that time.

Currently within the premises we will find an exhibition room on techniques and uses of Muslim ceramics from the 11th to the 15th century. And to access the highest level and avoid the steep slopes, an elevator has been installed on Guillén Sotelo Street (behind the town hall)
