Highights
The Alcázar rises in one of the highest points of the city of Toledo, which is why it has witnessed the future of the city. The archaeological remains from the Roman period support the existence of the Roman occupation of this place in the city of Toletum. After the arrival of the Visigoths, and especially with the Muslims who conquered the city in the 8th century, the Alcázar became a military and defensive fortress of Toledo. Major reforms will be made during the reign of Abd al-Rhaman II and his successors.
Since the end of the 19th century, Alcázar has been linked to the military branch, being the Infantry Academy and the General Military Academy, but a third fire devastated the construction and had to be raised again once again. In 1936, at the beginning of the Spanish Civil War, the fortress suffered a siege for just over two months, which ended with its destruction once. more. Since the 1940s, reform and reconstruction works have been carried out again to build an fortress faithful to the original plans of Alonso de Covarrubias in the 16th century.

The Army Museum was born in the 19th century, when Godoy created the Royal Military Museum, to add to the nascent interest in Europe in the conservation of old military objects. It also served to train soldiers in military academies.

Since 2010 the National Army Museum has been located in the Alcázar of Toledo . In its rooms are treasured centuries of history told through uniforms, weapons and objects for military use that have been preserved and increased since the creation of the Royal Military Museum in 1803.
