Highights
Built between 1767 and 1785, by order of the III Duke of Berwick and Liria, Don Jacobo Fitz-James Stuart y Colón. In the Spanish Civil War 1936, The building is destroyed, only its four facades remain standing but most of its collection was saved and protected in different places in Madrid, such as the British Embassy, the Prado Museum and the Bank of Spain; a, among others. The reconstruction was carried out by the 17th Duke of Alba and the 18th Dukes, Doña Cayetana Fitz-James Stuart and Don Luis Martínez de Irujo, who commissioned the architect Manuel Cabanyes to build the new Liria Palace, using Lutyens' plans. Today it is the residence of the 19th Duke of Alba, Don Carlos James Stuart and headquarters of the Casa de Alba foundation.
The origin of the historical-artistic collection of the Palace responds to the tastes and cultural hobbies of its owners. Of the complete set, great masters of painting stand out such as Goya, Velázquez, Murillo, Zurbarán, Greco, Ribera, Rubens, Tiziano
