Located in the old neighborhood of La Ribera, where merchants and nobles coexisted with seafarers in the Middle Ages, at the time of maximum expansion of the Mediterranean trade, was built the church of Santa María del Mar. In those times when such constructions involved long periods of construction (more than a century), this monument was an exception: only 55 years.
Its structure of three naves, almost the same height, with columns every 13 meters apart make it a space of great spaciousness, elevation and lightness. Among its stained glass windows it is worth highlighting the stained glass window of the Ascension, in the Chapel of Santa María, and that of the Lavatory in that of San Rafael, as well as the like the rose window that was destroyed by the earthquake that shook Barcelona in 1428, and rebuilt in the middle of the 15th century. Don' forget to look down where we will find private tombs and tombs of brotherhoods and guilds from the Middle Ages in Barcelona. This temple of shipowners and merchants was directed by Berenger de Montagut. You can go up to the roof to enjoy a privileged perspective and understand the medieval urban fabric and the structure of the city center, a 360° view.
There are no closing days
Known as the Rivera Cathedral it is one of the most perfect examples of Gothic architecture Catalan (14th century) for the architectural purity of its lines and the harmony of its proportions.
