The word boquerĂa derives from the French “boucherie” which translates to butcher shop, but second class butcher shop, since goat meat and offal from other animals were sold. It is the first of the city's municipal markets, it was inaugurated in 1840. Previously, its location was the convent of San Josep, although the market itself was built in 1840. It was born around 1217, but it was an itinerant character and was normally located on Las Ramblas. Its history dates back to when the peasants (peasant in Catalan) came with their products in carts to sell to the public. When the market is built, the farmers are installed inside it, thus releasing the road and are given positions organizing the market.

The care in the display of the goods and the decoration, whether fruit or chocolate in the windows, attracts the visitor and makes him enter to discover the colors of the tropical fruits and many other exquisite products.
