A few years after construction The most impressive works of the temple were carried out in the building, such as the wonderful work known as the Camarín de la Vírgen, which houses the image of the saint, the other chapels where baroque carvings made by artists of the stature of Esteve Bonet, Ponsoda or Vicent stand out, the frescoes of the famous Antonio Palomino - completed in the year 1703 - that represent Glory and are considered some of the highest artistic quality of their time. In the words of Llorente: “He made the vault transparent so that the sky could be seen; not the blue sky of nature: the golden sky of faith. Furthermore, during the following centuries the rooms of the temple continued to be expanded and decorated with rich altarpieces, sculptures and marbles from Genoa and Carrara.

Long description

The Basilica of Our Lady of los Desamparados was built in the year 1667 in the prevailing baroque style of its time by the architects Diego Martínez Ponce de Urrana, José Montero and José Artíguez thanks to the contributions of the Valencians who wanted to have a new space to dedicate to this Virgin. The temple was raised on the remains of the ancient Roman forum with white stone and brick topped with a beautiful dome with a lantern.
