Inaugurated by King Alfonso XII on April 29, 1875 as an Anatomical Museum. This museum arose thanks to the initiative of the Segovian doctor Pedro González Velasco. The architect was Francisco de Cubas. Upon the death of  Dr Velasco, the State purchased the building and all its collections compiled from travels and scientific expeditions that over time were enriched with samples from different peoples from the five continents. It has been called in different ways, from the Anthropological Museum to the National Museum of Ethnology in 1940. The original collection had 500 skulls to which other deformed skulls brought from Peru were added. and Bolivia, some human skeletons, among which the famous Extremaduran giant, 2.35 meters high, who arrived in Bolivia, stands out. He entered into an agreement with the doctor in which he would receive  an amount of money each day of his life in exchange for giving his body to the museum once he died

Among many other activities,   temporary exhibitions, performing arts, film series, conferences, courses, and seminars for professionals.
