The museum is located in the old house of Iván de Vargas, under whose orders he worked San Isidro and where he lived with his wife Santa María de la Cabeza and his son Illán. In the 16th century, the house of the Counts of Paredes was in this same place, where vestiges of a Renaissance patio that houses the remains of the ancient fountain of Cibeles, the original pipes, the bear and the dragon, where water carriers and the residents of Madrid collected water.
The permanent exhibition begins in prehistory, introducing us to the archaeological sites and objects from the Paleolithic, Neolithic, Age of Metals, Roman vestiges with the Mosaic of the Four Seasons accompanied by projections and Visigoth remains. Continue with the foundation of the city by the Muslims, Mayrit, the Christian conquest in 1085 and the arrival of the court to Madrid in 1561 with Philip II. From this period you can see a model of the missing Church of Santa María de la Almudena, a recreation of the Jerónimos Monastery,, the model of Madrid until 1656 and the tombs of Beatriz Galindo, La Latina, and her husband Francisco Ramírez, El Artillero. The third part of the exhibition is dedicated to San Isidro where the 17th century chapel is located. In this part you can also see the famous Pozo del Milagro where, according to tradition, the man fell. her son died by accident and thanks to the Saint's prayer the waters rose to the edge to return him healthy and prevent him from drowning
