The current Interpretation Center is distributed around three spaces that address three independent themes, in the first an audiovisual is projected about the formation process of an archaeological site and its subsequent excavation, in the second room the Roman rafts from the salting factory are exhibited and in the third the remains of the medieval Islamic wallthat closed the city of Al-Mariyyawith remains of one of its doors, which gives its name to the Puerta de Almería enclave. strong>

The tour reveals the data relating to the i< strong>Roman salting industryand its importance in the economy and maritime trade since salting fish was the only way they then had to preserve it and transport it to inland places. To be able to dispose of it, the pieces were cleaned and cut, alternating several layers of fish and salt, and then left to marinate in the sun for approximately twenty days. Once this was done, they were placed in amphorae and they were transported. On the other hand, you can see the remains of the Caliphal-era wall that faced the sea and which lasted until 1930. until the19th century when it was demolished. The fence opened and the city and the foundations of an access gate located between two towers that measured about six meters high and that some authors have identified with the Puerta de las Atarazanas.

Long description

The Puerta de Almería Archaeological Enclave was inaugurated in 2006 to make accessible the valuable archaeological remains from the Roman and medieval times which were found in Almería during the first urban excavations that took place in the historic center in 1984. In the course of these works, the only Roman remains in the city were found, six salting ponds dated between the 1st and 4th centuries, used for the production of garum and a section of the wall of Islamic originor built in the 10th century that surrounded the city in the south.
