This large hermitage was built in an eclectic classicist style with neoclassical influences according to the design of the architect Trinidad Cuartara Cassinello. Inside, the enormous altarpiece of the Main Chapel, the colorful openings and the choir stand out. Outside there is an elegant stone staircase and a slender tower with two bells located in the center of the façade that shows parallelism with the Town Hall, and which will be repeated by other later Almeria temples. At first, the temple housed the wooden carving of the Virgen del Carmen, patron saint of the city's fishermen, made by the sculptor Cuesta López and blessed in 1928. Unfortunately, this sculpture was destroyed during the Civil Warand currently, another one by the artist Jesús de Perceval carved in 1952 is on display.

Long description

The church of San Roque was built in the 19th century on the site of an ancient medieval mosque located in the Al-Hawd neighborhood that was transformed into Christian parishin the 15th century. This temple was built to remember the small hermitage dedicated to this Saint, protector of the plague and where the faithful every year organized a famous pilgrimage there during the month of August. In 1893 it was blessed carrying the image of the patron saint that was provisionally kept in the church of San Juan, in 1900 it was erected. as a Parish and during theCivil War it suffered many damages. Today it is the headquarters of the Brotherhood of Calvary.
