The Royal Site of Buen Retiro, just 2 km from the Royal Palace, was built in the 17th century under the reign of Philip IV, a privileged place around the majestic Jerónimos Monastery where there was a room that the Kings used in times of mourning to retire (hence the name). The park consisted of  several buildings of which only the Casón del Buen Retiro and the Saló remain ;n de Reinos. In the 18th century, reforms such as the Parterre were introduced and the town was built. the Royal Porcelain Factory destroyed during the War of Independence as well as the like the other trees except the Ahuehuete, the oldest tree in the park. In 1868 the gardens became municipal property. Various fountains are placed, such as the Artichoke fountain or the Fallen Angel fountain, and palaces are built, such as the Cristal one, created as greenhouse for the Philippine Exposition and the palace of Velázquez whose architect was Ricardo Velázquez Bosco. Until 1972 there was the Menagerie where there are remains of the cages used to exhibit the animals. It is the favorite park of Madrid residents, especially on Sundays, you can rent boats to stroll around the large pond and contemplate the magnificent monument of Alfonso XII. The large number of terraces invites the walker to have an aperitif; Every year in the month of May the famous Book Fair takes place where authors sign their copies in the more than 200 booths that are distributed throughout along the Paseo de Coches.
