Highights

This museum has three sections dedicated to Archaeology, Fine Arts and Ethnology. In the building, the works are arranged between the garden where the oldest objects stand out such as the famous Iberian boars and the Roman vestiges and the main nucleus with the stairs with works such as an important canvas painted by the artist Sebastián Gómez and an alabaster tomb from the late 14th century. On the other hand, there are nine rooms arranged chronologically with works of art between the 15th and 20th centuries where a Mudejar coffered ceiling from the 14th century, the Piedad, stands out. between Saint John and the Magdalene by Luis de Morales, a Filipino-style ivory crucifix, two canvases attributed to Juan Bautista Maíno, a painting of Saint Francis de Sales executed by Francisco Bayeu, a Concepción by Luis Paret y Alcáacute ;zar, and another painting from the 17th century that shows San Francisco de Alcántara by the painter Alonso de Mesa, among others.

Long description

This museum is one of the oldest in Spain since it was created in the year 1848 with the name of Provincial Museum with the aim of bringing together all the artistic works and objects that came from the religious confiscations carried out a few years previously by the Provincial Monuments Commission. It is currently collection has been expanded with numerous acquisitions and donations and has been established in the Palacio de los Álvarez Abarca built in the 16th century, where its permanent exhibition and the different temporary exhibitions held throughout the year are shown.
