The site occupied by the current market always had the same commercial functions since since the Middle Ages the market tasks took place in the old Plaza de San Martín, space occupied by the current building and the surrounding streets. As in the rest of Spanish cities, merchants were grouped according to the products they sold giving rise to the name of the streets that today continue to remind us of those activities commercial: cordoneros, charcoal makers, button makers, etc. The current structure derives from the need that arose at the end of the 19th century to have a covered space where it would be more comfortable and hygienic to sell food, so in the year or 1909, the same architect who designed the famous Casa Lis, concluded This property that has been and continues to be used so much by the city of Salamanca.
