The church is dedicated to Our Lady of the Angels, patron saint of the Franciscan order. Built on old land offered to Saint Francis of Assisi when he was in Madrid in the year 1214 on a pilgrimage to Santiago de Compostela. The last temple to be built It dates back to the 18th century, completed under the orders of Francisco Sabatini. It is property of the Ministry of Foreign Affairs. In 1963 it was elevated by Pope John XXIII to the dignity of Minor Basilica and in 1980 it was declared a Basilica. historical-artistic monument. Inside it houses a gallery with 52 paintings owned by the Prado Museum on the biography of Saint Francis.
