Highights

   Declared a National Monument in 1925. The primitive monastery was located on the Pardo highway. The Catholic Monarchs moved it to this place in 1503. Philip II had a Royal room to retreat to in times of mourning. During the War of Independence it was transformed in artillery barracks. In the 19th century it was reformed. and in 1906 on the occasion of the wedding of Alfonso the grand staircase The church is from  Gothic style inside.

With the expansion  of the Prado Museum in the 21st century by Rafael Moneo, the cloister has joined the art gallery.

Long description

   Old monastery of S Jerónimo el Real. In this church they swore  the heirs to the crown of Spain as princes of Asturias from Philip II to Isabel II and the wedding of Alfonso XIII with Queen Victoria Eugenia of Battenberg took place. In 1975  Juan Carlos I was proclaimed king.  Next to it is the Prado Museum and the Royal Academy of Language
