Highights
The museum was created by King Carlos III in 1771 as the Royal Cabinet of Natural History. Its collections come from the collections of Pedro Franco Dávila, a Spanish merchant born in Guayaquil who gave them to him. to the Spanish crown. It also had an extensive library of more than 1,230 volumes. The collection has precious minerals from all continents, plants, algae, animals of all kinds, porcelain objects, sculptures, etc. In 1913 the millionaire Andrew Carnegie gave away King Alfonso XIII gave an exact replica of the skeleton of a Diplodocus discovered in 1899 in Wyoming (United States). Through different exhibitions the public can learn about all the collections. The collection of stuffed animals stands out.
Among the research projects in which the museum participates, the most important is that of Atapuerca.
