The city of Salamanca is known for having two cathedrals popularly known as the "Old" and the "New". The Cathedral of the Assumption of the Virgin was the second cathedral temple that was built between the 16th and 17th centuries by the famous architect Rodrigo Gil de Hontañón mixing the late Gothic, Renaissance and Baroque styles. This enormous building was declared Asset of Cultural Interest and National Monument< /strong> and currently it is one of the most visited monuments in Salamanca.
The construction of the temple took It was carried out between the years 1513 and 1733 and while the new oratory was being built, the faithful continued to go to the old one to pray. For this reason, when the works were completed in the Enlightenment era, the people of Salamanca decided to preserve the ""old"" cathedral that had given them so much use. The truth is that due to the enormous growth of the city promoted by the University, it was necessary to have a larger space for the celebration of worship, which is why they built this > building parallel to the previous one and projecting the new tower over the old one, 93-meter-high bell tower.
The New Cathedral has a rectangular floor plan, three naves and a straight head. Inside, the Gothic style snow-capped vaults, the Baroque dome, the choir and the Main Chapel covered by a polychrome starry roof that houses an image of the Assumption of the Virginmade in the year 1624. Unfortunately, the architectural complex suffered from the consequences of the Lisbon earthquake of 1755, with visible signs still remaining in the cracks and broken stained glass windows.
